A troupe of traditional drummers put on a show for the Burundi refugees in the Nduta camp in Tanzania. Their performances help the refugees take their minds of their troubles if only for a little while.
Central African Republic Refugee Crisis - 2015
At the end of 2015, I traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon for UNHCR to document the refugee crisis in the Central African Republic. Nearly half a million refugees have fled CAR since conflict between Seleka and anti-Balaka forces began there in late 2012. The pieces below were filmed and edited by Michael Onyiego.
Tanzania: Burundian Refugee Crisis - 2015
Tens of thousands of refugees fled into Tanzania following political unrest and violence in Burundi in May of 2015. Many landed in Kagunga, a tiny fishing village with only one road in and none out. UNHCR was forced to ferry refugees across Lake Tanganyika to safety while battling an outbreak of cholera on the shore. The pieces below were produced, filmed, edited and written by Michael Onyiego.
